For a while now I’ve had the crazy idea to try to make an album using only the Yamaha FB-01 synthesizer from 1986. It was a budget synthesizer designed for musicians who wanted something close to the popular DX 7 sounds of the time, but on the cheap.

Over the years there’s been a ton of negative comments about this synth, generally that it’s a useless piece of junk, but I’ve always thought otherwise and have two which I bought for $20 each. So over the past year I recorded 40 something tracks using just these two FB-01’s. The tracks on this album were picked to represent a variety of sounds and styles.

This album is dedicated to my mother, Angela Balabanaglu. Αἰωνία ἡ μνήμη.

Technical stuff:
All sounds are from the FB-01’s, played/sequenced on an MPC 1000. Outboard effects used: reverb units, delay units, compressors, noise gates, a phase shifter and analog filters - in addition to eq and some effects on the Yamaha AW1600 recording console.

SYSEX:
Included in the download is a sysex file of 48 patches that I created while making this album. 36 are drums and 12 are sound effects. I focused on drums since there was the most interest in them on my Instagram posts. Often they sound best at certain midi key ranges, with software you can change envelopes, etc which I was doing often, and finally I used quite a bit of EQ and compression on them.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Before using you must remove the ".txt" extension. Bandcamp's file uploader would not accept a .syx file.

Excellent dance music that hijacks your eardrums and possibly your legs. Anxious for more Glooms in the future. Update: For reals, this is great trancy electronic music. I just love the way each track transitions and they never lose form. Each introduction just expands and the song gets better and better. Not a lot of artists like GLOOMS out there. Red
